Damp Skin: The Step That Costs Nothing and Changes Most

The single highest-return change in most routines is not a product at all. It is applying what you already own sixty seconds earlier, while skin is still wet.

Skin loses most of the water it gained from cleansing within about a minute of leaving the basin. If you dry your face, walk to another room, and then apply a humectant serum, you are asking that serum to find moisture in a face that no longer has any spare. It will pull some from deeper layers instead, which is exactly the opposite of the intention.

Applied to damp skin, the same serum has water to hold. The occlusive layer that follows then traps it. Nothing has been added to the routine and nothing has been spent, but the formula is doing the job it was designed for rather than a harder one.

How To Do It Properly

1. Do not dry your face

Pat once if you must. Damp means visibly damp, not towel-dry.

2. Press, do not rub

Warm the product between your palms and press it in. Rubbing on a compromised barrier is a small daily injury.

3. Move fast, then slow

Get the humectant on within thirty seconds. After that you have as long as you like for the lipid layer above it.

4. Watch the room, not the season

A heated room in December and an air-conditioned one in May do the same thing to your face. Adjust for the room you are actually in.

When It Will Not Help

If skin is stinging on contact with water, the barrier is already too thin for technique to fix. Drop back to a cleanser and a lipid for a fortnight, then try again.
